When and where did the draw take place?
The draw took place on the 9th October, 2002 in the Quidditch field of Hogwarts school ( or at least in the field in Beautiful Glen Nevis which was used as the location for the Quidditch field in the Warner Bros film).
Picture at the top of page shows Anne Thompson (left) and Heather Clyne (right).
Family and friends gathered for a breezy barbecue and kite flying session as the setting sun turned the sides of Ben Nevis (the highest mountain in the UK) a lovely pink colour.
The Harry Potter draw winner was selected by Anne Thompson, who lives locally. She grew up in the gatehouse of the Western Infirmary, Glasgow, which has been recently been transformed into the Glasgow's Maggie's Centre.
The winning entry was picked out of a rather "cauldron like" pot containing 442 entries

What is Maggie's Highlands, and why would I want them to have my money?
![]()
Around 1 in 3 men and 1 in 4 women in Scotland can expect to be diagnosed with cancer by the time they reach 74 years of age. Each year around 25,000 cases of cancer are diagnosed in this country
A new cancer care centre; Maggie's Highlands (registered charity number SCO3190) is to be built in the grounds of Raigmore Hospital, Inverness, Scotland, to provide support to people in the Highlands and Islands. Research performed by Cancer Support Centres in the UK and USA has reinforced the idea that there is a need for effective support of those individuals affected by cancer as well as providing support for family members, carers and friends. Maggie's centres provide a wide range of information and support services to cancer patients and their families. This resource would be especially valuable in this region where isolation experienced by cancer patients and their families is often compounded by remoteness.
To date Maggie's Highlands have raised half a million pounds and need to match this figure again before work begins in the grounds of Raigmore Hospital in February 2003. Patrons of the Maggie's Centres include Frank Gehry, Sir Angus Grossart CBE, Professor Eduardo Paolozzi CBE, JKRowling OBE, and the broadcaster Kirsty Wark.
If you would like to get a taste of the facilities and services which will be on offer at Maggies Highlands then a good place to look is at the Edinburgh Maggie's centre web site ( which has not been updated for a while, but still gives a good idea of Maggie's centres.
Services and resources are free, there is no charge for using the help offered by Maggie's Centres.

Heather Clyne looked after your entries in the draw.
This draw was organised by Heather Clyne, a PhD student at
Napier University, Edinburgh, who also undertook a sponsored walk in Brazil from 12-22nd October 2002 to raise money for Maggie's Highlands. The walk was 100km over 6 days, through the beautiful Chapada dos Veadeiros National Parque. Very dry and in temperatures of around 32oC. Which is A HELL OF A LOT if you come from the West Coast of Scotland!. Here are some pictures of the Hike and the beautiful Chapada dos Veadeiros (But bear with me, I have put some photos It may take time build up some more - I need to get some more spare time with the scanner!! - come back again)

A big thank you must of course go to JKRowling, for donating the set of books to raise money for a new Maggie's centre. Requests for assistance for all types of causes must come her way daily and her donation of the autographed hardback box set when asked for one book, is much appreciated.
Thank you to Bloomsbury books for mentioning this draw in their Harry Potter web site News
Thanks to Claire at http://www.harrypotterguide.co.uk for publicising the draw on her great Harry Potter fan club site
Thanks to Anne Martin who wrote such a nice piece back in the September edition of West Word and has been collecting entries at the West Word office in Morar.
Thanks to the Press and Journal who are supporting the Maggie's Highlands campaign and who have covered my fundraising efforts.
The Oban Times were great at publicising various fundraising events, and had entry forms for this draw in the Fort William office.
We were joined for the barbecue by, amongst others, a nice gentleman called Douglas Cairns, who is undertaking the first round the world flight by a pilot with typeI diabetes (my oldest son Fhian has TypeI diabetes also). You can follow details of the flight here.
Thanks to everyone who visited this site and entered the draw, and for the lovely messages of support that some people sent with entries
A big thank you
goes to Mrs Hastings, who made me feel very humble indeed by after only a moments consideration, giving the set of books straight back with the instructions that they were to be used to raise more money for Maggie's Highlands.Heather
